Car jacking is quite an issue in many parts of the south of Africa.

Some insurance companies are fighting back with their own teams actively going out to recover the cars, armed.

All you need to do is keep a bottle of pee in you car and when ever some one tries to steal your car you pour that bottle of piss in your lap. Then they won’t want to steal it!

One of my guilty pleasures is watching footage of real car chases and reckless inter-traffic driving. Like that russian asshole in the E34 BMW. Or those police chases on bikes in south america.

Am I the only person disturbed by the whole thing where private security companies are apparently just allowed to do this, though?

I recently read about that again. Apparently they sold a few thousand and went bankrupt pretty quickly. Cool/weird idea, though.

It’s needed. Many car jackings aren’t afraid to use weapons.

So go in with the upper hand.

In the U.K. for a ‘forced stop’ you may see a police officer with a baseball bat smash the rear window. This has the intended action of shocking the occupants from what they were doing such as reaching for a knife or gun causing sufficient delay to allow the police officers to get into a better vantage point.

Insane but needed. The insurance companies loose massive amounts of money each year due to stolen cars and the police often don’t have the time or resources to pursue every stolen car or do it right away and any delay will see that car parted out, driven across the border into a neighbouring country never to be seen again or in a container, again, never to be seen again.

The U.K. even has police officers, teams and departments in some South African countries solely to track down stolen cars from the U.K.

Sounds like a V8 roaring along in the first video (in the chase car). Reminds me of Mad Max, before the war. Before the apocalypse .

That and similar have been around for quite a while. Many insurance companies won’t insure it’s use and other find it’s too expensive, etc...

While sounding like an okay idea. It’s having the bottle open ready to go and if like most of the time the jacker has a gun and your windows are closed, no help at all.

Kinja'd!!! Svend > bhtooefr

They will be licensed to do so.

And in many regards takes some pressure off the police. The police often aren’t able to tackle and pursue every stolen car and time is of the essence as a stolen car can be parted out, driven across the border or put in a container and shipped away. Costing insurance companies massive amounts of money each year.

Many if not most of these jackings are done at gunpoint or knife point. So a company needs to show some force giving the occupants no doubt they will come off worst.

Based on the first paragraph I thought you enjoyed watching car jackings. After reading the entire thing I realized you enjoy watching the car recoveries. I’ll have to watch this when I get home tonight. Could be good entertainment.

That said, I’m imagining this is like the movie Bad Boys.

It’s active car recovery with weapons and no one dying. Of the few videos, I’ve not even heard any exchange of fire.

I have a South African colleague who travels back to see family from time to time and she says it’s crazy. If you see a red traffic light (often called ‘robots’ in South Africa) in an urban or rural area, you have to decide quickly whether it’s safer to stop or keep going (hijacked or t-boned).

This is insane.

I feel that in these situations police should be working with lojack and other services to figure this out rather than letting a third party do it. Granted, I don’t know much about South Africa, perhaps doing this makes sense.

Though I do admit, now I want to install a pepper spray/tazer to the side of my car! Not a flame thrower though. My windows are already smash proof, and that deters most people anyway

The Golf Mk6s are likely 3.2 V6s and the Mk7s likely 2.0TSis.

I love the sound of this Skoda Superb estate with the 3.6 V6 with after market exhaust.

In many parts of southern Africa car jacking and home invasions are a very common occurrence often done with guns or knives. It costs insurance companies massive amounts of money and the police don’t have the resources to pursue every stolen car straight away if at all.

Any delay will see the car parted out, driven across the border or in a container never to be seen again.

These companies will be licensed to do what they do.

Though armed and in all the videos I’ve seen so far no weapon has been fired and no one has been injured.

Having citizens take action is obviously encouraging, but in the end I doubt this company is priced for regular people’s regular cars.... so in a sense it’s private security. If more expensive cars are harder to steal, my impression is that the cheap ones will be stolen more often. Sure, it looks like an older C class and a VW GTi in that video... but at least here those are already higher end cars...

In a sense I do something similar; by having the shatterproof glass (which looks identical to bulletproof glass) it deters muggers, but it’s kind of unjust too, if there’s a car identical to mine next to me and a mugger is pondering who to mug , but their glass is stock, then they’ll mug the other car... so yeah.

Many people go way further than I do;they have bodyguards, and that’s the really scary part. In order to get a gun carry permit you need to be a police officer or a military officer (the 10th article gives us gun rights within our property only ) so what bodyguards do is become an officer in a poor county that can’t really verify if you’re in post, get a gun, and then come to Mexico City, and be paid two or three times as much what the municipality would by working in private security .

It’s kind of bad because it’s skewes their focus from “What public force we need” to “what private force I need” I find they do the same with private schools.

These are the companies taking action with many of the officers being ex-military.

If you look through the videos you’ll see the cars vary wildly from VW Golfs, older cars to newer cars.

Insurance in southern Africa is expensive already so for a little extra to get your car back, isn’t really an issue.

They have the support of the police mainly in that it lets the police carry on with other duties and such as robberies, burglaries, other stolen vehicles, etc...

I don’t care much for the seemingly haphazard editing, but the sound of the Golf Mk 7.5 is absolutely worth it. Its like a real world version of Mad Max.  South Africa is such a beautiful country, its sad its so beset by crime.
